Women wait longer for first babies

Irish women are leaving it slightly longer to have their first child, according to the latest figures on births from the Central Statistics Office.

The CSO said the average of age of first-time mothers in the first three months of this year was 28.6 years, compared to 28.3 in the first quarter of 2004.

It said the average age of all women giving birth was also up from 30.7 in the first quarter of last year to 30.9 in the first quarter of 2005.

Just over one third of all babies born in the first three months of this year were born outside marriage.
