Briton confirmed dead in Bali blast

06/10/2005 - 14:13:29
A British national was killed in the bomb blasts in Bali, the Australian Foreign Minister confirmed today.

The bodies of Colin Zwolinski, a British-born mining boss, and his wife Fiona have now been formally identified after the couple died as they dined at a restaurant.

They were said to have been holidaying with friends and family on the island when the suicide bombers struck on Saturday, killing at least 26 people and injuring more than 100.

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has now confirmed four Australians were killed in the weekend bombings in Bali, including the couple from Newcastle, New South Wales.

Mr Zwolinski, a mining executive, had dual Australian and British nationality.

Mr Downer told ABC Radio in Australia: “We can now confirm that four Australians have actually been killed in the bombings in Bali.

“The bodies of Colin and Fiona Zwolinski have now been identified formally by the police and we’re able to verify that it’s them who were killed.

“We were obviously of the view that they almost certainly had been killed but as of todaywe’re now able to confirm that their bodies have been identified.”

Mr Downer said now that Mr Zwolinski, 54, and Mrs Zwolinski, 44, had been identified, it should be possible to bring them home reasonably quickly.

The news comes as Mr Zwolinski’s family in England said they were still waiting to hear news of his fate.

Mr Zwolinski’s brother Dennis said he had had no official confirmation.

Speaking outside his home in Ware, Hertfordshire, he said: “We are still just waiting to see, so the family is not in a position to make any comment at the moment.”
