06/10/2005 - 08:42:25
Flamboyant singer Elton John has donated £25,000 (€37,300) to help Nepal's fight against the HIV virus.

The bespectacled rocker, 58, has given the money to the Blue Diamond Society - the only gay rights group in the Himalayan country.

Sunil Babu Pant, chief executive of the Blue Diamond Society, said the donation would fund a clinic for gay and lesbians infected with HIV.

Pant enthuses: "Sir Elton John recently contributed £25,000 (€37,300) for the treatment of HIV/AIDS-affected gays and lesbians and assured us of further assistance in the future."

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimated over 60,000 Nepalese are infected with HIV.
