Austrian school evacuated after hydrochloric acid spill
05/10/2005 - 08:54:31Authorities evacuated a Vienna school after about 30 litres of hydrochloric acid spilled in a workshop and a teacher was overcome by fumes, officials said today.
The accident happened yesterday when the acid leaked from a faulty valve, police said.
About 40 firefighters sealed off nearby streets as a precaution and evacuated about 70 students and 10 instructors as fumes spread rapidly through the school.
The teacher had to be resuscitated at the scene after collapsing and was treated at a local hospital, authorities said.
The school reopened for classes today.
