Afghanistan: Roadside bomb targets Canadian troops

05/10/2005 - 09:17:25
A roadside bombing today near a convoy of Canadian troops on the outskirts of the southern city of Kandahar seriously wounded at least one Afghan civilian.

Canadian forces immediately blocked the road where the blast happened. Kandahar provincial Gov. Asadullah Khalid said one Afghan man who was driving past in a tractor at the time of the explosion was badly hurt.

Sgt. Marina Evans, a spokesman for the US-led coalition in Kabul, confirmed a home-made bomb went off near a Canadian patrol, outside their base, but said none of its forces were hurt or equipment damaged.

Mohammed Sabir, who witnessed the blast from 200 yards away, said a second Afghan, a child, was also hurt.

He also said a Canadian vehicle was caught in the blast, but there was no official confirmation of that.
