A footballer arrested two months ago on suspicion of raping a 20-year-old woman will not face charges, it was confirmed today.

Rufus Brevett, 36, a Plymouth Argyle defender, was detained by police in Plymouth in the early hours of August 1 after the woman alleged she had been raped.

The Championship player was held for questioning before being released on bail, and had been due to report back to police tomorrow.

Devon and Cornwall Police said today: “Following a decision by the Crown Prosecution Service, no further action is to be taken against this man.”

Derby-born Brevett played for Doncaster Rovers, Queens Park Rangers, Fulham and West Ham United before joining Plymouth Argyle this summer.

A Plymouth Argyle spokesman said: “We are pleased that the matter has been resolved, as we were always confident it would be.”
