Human rights body slams rushed introduction of new laws
05/10/2005 - 11:34:17The Human Rights Commission has accused the Government of rushing laws through the Oireachtas without allowing enough time to consider their implications.
In its latest annual report, the commission said legislation that often had serious human rights implications was being rushed in without any detailed debate.
It also criticised a "democratic deficit" in the way in which EU legislation is introduced in Ireland.
The commission said EU laws were usually a done deal before Irish legislators ever had a chance to discuss them and this was a serious problem that needed to be addressed.
