FG expresses concern about HSE hospital network plans

05/10/2005 - 08:52:50
Fine Gael TD Liam Twomey has expressed concern about a Health Service Executive plan to group Ireland's hospitals into four regional networks.

Reports this morning said the move was designed to simplify management structures and was due to be finalised at a HSE board meeting tomorrow.

However, Dr Twomey has claimed the plan will lead to the downgrading of some hospitals in line with the controversial Hanly reforms.

He has also claimed that any move to include hospitals as far apart as Limerick and Donegal in the same regional network would be unworkable.

"There has never been any sort of connection between those two parts of the country as far as organisation of the health services is concerned since the foundation of the State," he said.

"I think it will create massive problems for patients."
