Reid praises Pakistan for anti-terror efforts

04/10/2005 - 14:23:00
Defence Secretary John Reid today praised the Pakistani military for its efforts in fighting terrorism and drug trafficking.

Reid said Pakistan’s measures to control security problems on its borders were enabling Afghanistan to have a more stable, democratic future, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defence.

“We recognise the twin scourges of terrorism and counter narcotics, fuelled by extremism, are a huge challenge to us all, and we fully support Pakistan in its efforts to address the problems in the region,” Reid said.

“Tragically, there have been about 300 Pakistani military killed in counter-terrorist operations in the border areas, and many more injured,” said Reid, who met President Gen. Pervez Musharraf and other top officials during his visit.

“This is testimony to the commitment of the Pakistani Government in bringing regional stability.”
