12 killed as police fire on stone-throwing students
30/09/2005 - 19:42:28Police opened fire on stone-throwing students in two towns in north-eastern India today, killing 12 people, authorities said.
More than 100 other people, including 54 police, were injured in the two protests, both of which turned violent when the students began throwing stones and attacking officers.
The police had been sent in to keep watch over the demonstrations, said the home minister of the eastern state of Meghalaya, Mukul Sangma.
“Hundreds of students marching in two district towns in protest against a government decision turned violent and attacked policemen and magistrates on duty with stones and other missiles, forcing the police to open fire,” he said in Gauhati.
