Harney hopes MRSA case will not spark flood of actions
30/09/2005 - 10:46:54Health Minister Mary Harney has said she hopes a legal case being taken by a woman who contracted MRSA will not lead to a flood of similar actions.
A 68-year-old Kilkenny woman has become the first person to lodge papers against the State claiming she was infected with the so-called "super bug" at her local hospital.
Asked about the matter this morning, Ms Harney said she was taking measures to improve hygiene and prevent the spread of MRSA and hoped a raft of such actions would not materialise.
She also pointed out that MRSA was a problem in many countries.
"I hope we can get to a situation where litigation isn't the route that people take in order to vindicate their rights, that they will see that our hospitals are run to the highest possible standards," she said.
