Breakthrough reached in medical card dispute

Following a meeting this afternoon, agreement has been reached in the dispute between doctors and health service employees over GP-only medical cards.

The Irish Medical Organisation accepted assurances over the integrity of the scheme, which will see 200,000 cards issued to people on low incomes.

Following this afternoon’s breakthrough, it’s expected there will be re-advertisement for those who are eligible to apply.

The medical cards should come into use in the next few weeks.
