ASTI gives guarded welcome to schools announcement
29/09/2005 - 16:15:06The Government's announcement to build over 20 new schools was greeted with caution by the ASTI this afternoon.
The teachers union said that it would not help existing schools which were still severely under-funded.
The €500m investment will be spent on developing new primary and secondary schools in 13 counties.
However, John White of the ASTI says this was not enough: “It'll be very welcomed by the communities who are going to get new schools.
"But we must never forget that we do not fund our second level education system as a rich country, we fund it as if we were in the seventies, as if we were a third world country almost.”
