Nemeth scores on comeback

27/09/2005 - 09:32:15
Szilard Nemeth scored on his Middlesbrough comeback as four of Steve McClaren’s squad returned from injury for the reserves.

The Slovakian striker fired the first goal in a 2-0 victory for the Boro second string over their Wigan counterparts.

His neat chip over former Boro goalkeeper Gary Walsh after 33 minutes was followed by a second goal in the 84th minute by Adam Johnson.

Boro gave Nemeth, Gaizka Mendieta and Chris Riggott 45 minutes each last night as they played their first matches in several weeks.

Spanish playmaker Mendieta had not played since damaging a calf muscle against Charlton in August, while Nemeth picked up an ankle ligament problem on the opening day of the season against Liverpool.

Centre-back Riggott had not played since April following a knee problem which required surgery over the summer.

Completing the quartet of returning first-team players was defender Stuart Parnaby, who suffered a knee injury in training on the eve of the season. He played the full 90 minutes.
