Coleman unimpressed by Spurs
Fulham boss Chris Coleman cast a doubt over Tottenham’s European aspirations after the Cottagers pushed their London rivals close at White Hart Lane last night.
Jermain Defoe’s eighth-minute route-one strike was enough to push Spurs up to fourth in the Barclays Premiership table, but they were far from convincing against a team that dropped into the bottom four.
“I don’t want to put extra pressure on Martin Jol, but I would think he is looking to finish in the top six and that’s why he has invested in so many good players,” said Coleman.
“But I thought we could easily have come out of the game with a point if only we had been better in the final third of the field. I was disappointed about that.
“The difference between us and Tottenham is about £45m (€66.2m) I would think, but there wasn’t that much between Tottenham and us.”
Tottenham boss Jol admitted he was relieved his side did not need a second goal, but also expressed his delight at Spurs’ promising start to the season.
He said: “If you had told me that after facing big teams like Chelsea and Liverpool in the first seven games we would still be fourth I would take that and I am very happy. Hopefully it is a position we can maintain.”
