Martin seeking legal advice on Irish Ferries pay-out
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheál Martin is reportedly seeking legal advice in an effort to avoid footing some of the redundancy bill faced by Irish Ferries.
The company is planning to replace workers on its Irish Sea routes with cheaper labour from abroad and has offered them voluntary redundancy.
In normal redundancy situations, the companies involved are entitled to reclaim 60% of the statutory two-week entitlement from the Exchequer.
Irish Ferries secured such a rebate when it replaced 150 staff on its Rosslare-Cherbourg route with cheaper foreign workers and is seeking a similar payment in relation to its latest plans to lay off 540 staff.
However, Mr Martin has reportedly consulted the Attorney General with a view to withholding the pay-out on the grounds that the jobs in question are not being eliminated.
