All square at Presidents Cup

25/09/2005 - 10:19:50
It is all to play for at the Presidents Cup as the United States and International teams enter the final day tied on 11 points each.

The last Presidents Cup finished tied in South Africa two years ago, and it is quite possible history could be repeated after the 12 singles matches.

In the first afternoon fourball match, Internationals Adam Scott and Retief Goosen continued their dominance, defeating Justin Leonard and Scott Verplank five and four.

Scott and Goosen are unbeaten in four matches, posting three wins and a tie.

In match two, Americans Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco matched Scott and Goosen’s three-and-a-half points from four matches, hammering hapless Australians Peter Lonard and Nick O’Hern six and five.

“Chris played really well and I have enjoyed playing with him,” said Mickelson. “We have been able to feed off each other and it has been a good, fun couple of days.”

In match three, Fred Couples and Davis Love halved with Michael Campbell and Angel Cabrera. The Americans were the least satisfied with the outcome of the match, however, as Couples had a golden chance to win the match with a birdie at the last, only to miss an uphill eight-footer.

In match four, Internationals Mark Hensby and Tim Clark took an early lead and were never threatened by Kenny Perry and Stewart Cink, winning five and three.

In match five, Jim Furyk was on fire and, with a little help from Tiger Woods, outlasted Vijay Singh and Stuart Appleby two up. Furyk carded six birdies and Woods holed a key birdie putt on the 16th for the Americans.
