Mariners rewarded with Magpies tie
Grimsby were rewarded for their Carling Cup giantkilling exploits with a third-round home tie against Newcastle.
Russell Slade’s men beat Tottenham 1-0 at Blundell Park on Tuesday and will now host the Magpies in the last week of October.
“It’s a great draw for us, a fantastic draw,” the Mariners boss told Sky Sports News.
“We’re on the same side of the country and for them to come to Blundell Park, as with Spurs, is fantastic for our supporters.
“It will be another packed house again, we look forward to it and hopefully we can repeat the evening.”
Fellow Coca-Cola League Two side Barnet got a plum tie, drawn away to Manchester United.
The north Londoners booked their place in the third round with a 2-1 home win over Championship side Plymouth at Underhill.
There were five all-Premiership ties, with holders Chelsea at home to Charlton, Arsenal drawn away to bottom side Sunderland, UEFA Cup sides Everton at home to Middlesbrough, Fulham hosting West Brom and West Ham travelling to the Reebok Stadium to face Bolton.
Doncaster and Gillingham, conquerors of Premiership opponents Manchester City and Portsmouth in round two, were drawn to face each other at Belle Vue.
Crystal Palace face Liverpool at Selhurst Park while newly-promoted Wigan are at home to Adrian Boothroyd’s promising Watford side.
City rivals Birmingham and Aston Villa were both drawn at home to face Norwich and Burnley respectively, while Blackburn are at home to Leeds.
The Championship’s top two Reading and Sheffield United clash at the Madejski Stadium while second-tier sides Cardiff and Leicester meet at Ninian Park.
Mansfield will hope to see off another team from the Championship after they were drawn to face Millwall at Field Mill, having knocked out Southampton in the last round.
The ties will be played in the week beginning October 24.
