Bowyer facing driving ban after 110mph speeding

23/09/2005 - 19:30:21
Newcastle United midfielder Lee Bowyer is facing a driving ban after being clocked doing around 110mph in his Porsche 911 on a stretch of the A1 near his Northumberland home.

The 28-year-old was clocked by a moile police patrol and followed for eight miles in July this year during which time he reached speeds of 112mph, magistrates heard today.

Magistrates in Bedlington, Northumberland, heard that the Toon ace overtook a patrol car near his home in Felton, Northumberland, and was then followed for eight miles to Stannington, near Morpeth.

Bowyer today admitted the speeding offence by letter and did not attend today’s hearing.
Magistrates adjourned the case until October 7 and ordered Bowyer to attend.

Earlier this week the player lost the first stage of his legal challenge against a decision to prosecute him for an on-pitch brawl with team-mate Kieron Dyer during the Premiership clash with Aston Villa at Newcastle’s St James’s Park stadium last season.

Bowyer had been summoned to appear before Newcastle magistrates earlier this month under Section 4 of the Public Order Act but that was delayed while his lawyers challenged the decision to prosecute him.

In midweek, Mr Justice Bean, sitting in private at the High Court, in London, refused an application to hold a judicial review of the case.

Bowyer was fined £250,000 by the club for the on-pitch brawl and his solicitor Steven Barker maintains that is punishment enough and any further punishment by the courts would not be in the public interest.

He added that Bowyer now has the right to apply to a panel of three High Court judges to review the application.
