Mulligan and Healy win player honours

21/09/2005 - 02:31:59
Tyrone forward Owen Mulligan picked up the Vodafone GAA All-Star Player of the Month award for August today, just five days before probably the most important game of his life.

The 21-year-old joiner, affectionately nicknamed "Muggsy", has been to the forefront of the Red Hands' rise through to a place in Sunday's All-Ireland football final against Kerry.

The most notable of Mulligan's performances came last month when he struck a stunning haul of 1-07 in Tyrone's quarter-final replay victory over Dublin and three crucial points in the one-point semi-final defeat of Ulster rivals Armagh.

The Vodafone GAA All-Star Player of the Month award for August for hurling went to nippy Galway forward Niall Healy.

The Craughwell clubman, who made up for the Tribesmen's senior final loss to Cork by claiming an Under-21 All-Ireland winners' medal last weekend, was an obvious choice.

Healy, who captained the Galway minors to All-Ireland success last year, made his senior championship debut this summer and hit 4-04 in all - including a hat-trick of goals in that epic semi-final defeat of Kilkenny.

Already a Fitzgibbon Cup winner with Limerick IT in 2005, Healy has a burgeoning inter-county ahead of him.
