Dougal disappointed with Lennon verdict

21/09/2005 - 08:19:02
Referee Stuart Dougal has voiced disappointment over the three-match ban given to Celtic captain Neil Lennon in the wake of the Old Firm derby last month.

The 34-year-old escaped a lengthy suspension from the Scottish Football Association for his aggressive confrontation with Dougal following his dismissal after the Hoops’ 3-1 defeat at Ibrox on August 20.

Lennon appeared to barge the match official and was censured with the ban, which begins with the CIS Insurance Cup tie against Falkirk tonight.

But Dougal admits he is now concerned over the message being sent after the ban.

He told the Daily Record: “To be honest I have not had enough time yet to fully absorb the decision but it is fair to say I am disappointed.

“I’m not disappointed for my own sake because this was never about Stuart Dougal versus Neil Lennon or Stuart Dougal versus Celtic Football Club.

“No, this was about the future protection of Scotland’s referees and that’s where the feeling of disappointment comes in.”
