Hain announces talks to address loyalist grievances

21/09/2005 - 11:09:46
Northern Secretary Peter Hain has announced plans to open a series of talks with unionists and loyalists in an effort to address their concerns about the peace process.

The move follows a recent upsurge in loyalist violence which unionists say is linked to a perception that Protestant culture is being eroded by recent developments in the North.

In a speech in Belfast today, Mr Hain said he accepted that unionists were suspicious, but insisted they had gained a lot from the peace process.

He said the IRA had basically accepted that Northern Ireland would remain part of the United Kingdom unless the people decided otherwise.

Mr Hain also warned loyalists that violence would get them nowhere and, if they did not choose the political path, they would face the full rigour of the law.
