Cemetery dig for girl's body called off

21/09/2005 - 16:12:41
Gardaí today called off their investigation at a cemetery in Co Laois.

Detectives in Abbeyleix received information that a box containing the body of a young girl was found while the grave in Ballylinan was being dug to bury a local man in 1994.

The graveyard was sealed off and members of the Garda Technical Bureau carried out an examination of the grave today.

A Garda spokeswoman confirmed the investigation had been called off, after the examination failed to uncover any evidence to support the allegations.

The assistance of the state pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy has not been requested.

The information, which was supplied in recent days, claimed the box containing the girl’s body was covered up and the body of the man was placed on top.

Gardaí have said there has been no speculation that any relatives of the deceased man in the grave have any connection with the allegations made.

Around 30 gardaí were involved in the operation and missing persons’ files were checked as part of their investigation into the tip-off.
