Tupac statue unveiled

21/09/2005 - 15:49:36
The late Tupac Shakur became the first rapper to be immortalised with a statue last week.

The seven-foot bronze construction was unveiled at the newly opened Tupac Amaru Shakur Center For The Arts in Stone Mountain, Georgia, on 13 September to mark the ninth anniversary of the star's death.

It is surrounded by poetry and quotations from the rapper's work.

Sculptor Tina Allen designed the statue, which shows Shakur dressed in a suit and holding a copy of his book of poetry penned when he was just 19, The Rose That Grew From Concrete.

Allen said: "I was deeply moved to see so many people brought to tears upon first seeing the sculpture - it was clear that something very special had come into all of our lives through this remarkable young poet."

Shakur was gunned down in Las Vegas in 1996 aged just 25.
