Consultants mount strong defence of tax exemptions

21/09/2005 - 12:20:29
The body representing tax consultants in Ireland has mounted a strong defence of controversial tax reliefs and exemptions for certain business people.

In a submission to the Oireachtas finance committee today, the Irish Taxation Institute said such measures had been of major benefit to the Irish economy.

Spokesman Mark Redmonds said the Irish Financial Services Centre in Dublin was an example of how tax reliefs had made important developments possible.

"[The IFSC] has put Ireland on the international map as a centre of excellence for financial services," he said.

"It has created directly at least 14,000 high-earning jobs and, conservatively, it's estimated it contributes at least per annum €700m."

The Oireachtas committee is currently reviewing a range of tax reliefs amid growing calls for their abolition.
