Teenager charged with rape and robbery
A 15-year-old boy appeared in court today charged with the rape and robbery of a woman in Dun Laoghaire, on Monday.
The teenager, who had been in care, was arrested on Monday and brought to the Dublin Children’s Court this afternoon.
He was charged with the alleged rape of a woman in Dun Laoghaire, on September 19, under section four of the Criminal Law Rape Amendment Act.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also charged with the alleged robbery of €60 from the same woman, contrary to section 14 of the Theft and Fraud Offences Act.
Detective Sergeant Peter Woods, of Dun Laoghaire Garda Station, told Judge Angela Ni Chonduin that he arrested the teenager at 6.05pm on Monday.
He was then conveyed to Dun Laoghaire Garda Station where he was detained under the provisions of Section four of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
The period of detention was extended at 12.05am today.
Detective Garda Martina Walsh told the court that at 1.35pm this afternoon she charged the boy with the two offences in the presence of a responsible adult, after which he made no reply.
Judge Ni Chonduin was told that the teenager was in care and social workers and care staff were in court.
Det-Gda Walsh applied for the teenager to be remanded in custody "due to the seriousness of the offences".
Defence solicitor Ms Margaret MacEvilly said that an application for bail was not being made.
Ms Rose Sweeney, of the Special Residential Services Board, told Judge Ni Chonduin that the most appropriate remand facility for the boy was the Trinity House Detention Centre.
She also said that an assessment of the boy would be carried out while he was in custody.
Judge Ni Chonduin remanded the boy in custody to appear again next Tuesday, pending directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
