20/09/2005 - 07:58:32
The next General Election could be a cliffhanger between the Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats coalition and the rainbow alternative, according to an opinion poll published this morning.

The Irish Examiner/Lansdowne poll puts combined support for Fianna Fail and the PDs at 43%, with Fine Gael, the Labour Party and Greens slightly behind on 41%.

Overall support for Fianna Fáil was put at 38%, down from 42% at the 2002 general election, while the PDs have seen their support rise by one percentage point to 5%.

Elsewhere, Fine Gael's support was unchanged at 23%, Labour were up one point to 12% and the Greens were up two points to 6%.

Sinn Féin has also seen its support rise from 7% at the last general election to 10% in the poll.

Meanwhile, 43% of respondents said they were dissatisfied with the Government's performance, compared to 37% who were satisfied.

Despite this, the Taoiseach had the highest satisfaction rating of all the party leaders at 44%.
