Barristers’ body rejects proposed reforms of legal sector

20/09/2005 - 07:55:09
The body that oversees the profession of barrister in Ireland has reportedly rejected the Competition Authority's proposed reforms of the sector.

The authority has recommended the abolition of the King's Inns' and the Law Society's monopoly on legal training, as well the establishment of a legal services commission similar to the Medical Council for doctors.

Reports this morning said the Society of the King's Inns was claiming that the establishment of a legal services commission would represent an interference by the Government in the independence of the legal profession.

It has also reportedly rejected the call for an end to the legal training monopoly because the society is in a position to teach skills that other institutions cannot and because it is a non-profit organisation charging fees that compare favourably to those for other post-graduate courses.
