Two killed in Turkish bus blast, 10 injured

19/09/2005 - 07:19:46
An explosion on a passenger bus killed two Turks and injured 10 people near a Mediterranean resort, authorities said today.

The cause of last night’s explosion near the popular resort town of Manavgat in Antalya province was not clear. Police would not say whether it was a terrorist attack.

“We’re thoroughly investigating it,” said Antalya police chief Naciye Ekmekcibasi.

The bus was travelling from the southern city of Adana to Antalya. It was not clear if there were any foreigners aboard the bus. The injured were reported to be in stable condition.

It was reported that the explosion partly tore the bus into pieces. Police prevented two reporters from taking pictures and briefly detained them.

In mid-July, a bomb explosion on a minibus in the Aegean resort town of Kusadasi killed five people, including a British woman and an Irish teenager. Kurdish rebels were suspected of being behind the attack, but did not claim responsibility.

More than 37,000 people have died since 1984 as a result of the conflict between Kurdish rebels and the Turkish military.
