Seamus Brennan launches 'Opportunities and Options' guide for lone parents

19/09/2005 - 17:20:39
A new guide addressing the difficulties faced by lone parents in Ireland has been launched in Limerick.

'Opportunities and Options' will be posted to 86,000 single parents on welfare support across the country and offers advice on education, employment and childcare.

Social Affairs Minister Seamus Brennan admits childcare is a major obstacle for those who want to return to work: “There are some 60,000 to 70,000 places available at the moment but we’ve got to do far better than that.

“Everybody is engaged at the moment in trying to put together policies that will dramatically increase childcare places and I do acknowledge that for lone parents in particular it is a particular issue, because if they are to get to employment, and to work, and to training, then childcare is at the centre of that issue,” he said.
