Fuel protest truckers attempt to disrupt traffic in Dublin

19/09/2005 - 11:27:28
A convoy of truck drivers from the north-east of the country attempted to cause traffic disruption in Dublin this morning as part of a protest over rising fuel prices.

Up to 30 truckers left the Monaghan and Louth areas this morning to drive in convoy to the capital.

Their original plan was to gather at government buildings, but instead they spent much of the morning driving around the city's quays before stopping at Dublin Port.

Their protest caused some disruption to traffic in the area, but no major delays.

The truckers want the Government to reduce tax and excise duty on diesel in order to offset the rising price of oil on the international markets.

They claim diesel prices have increased by 40% so far this year, leaving many haulage businesses at risk of collapse.
