Michael Owen got off the mark for his new club and left boss Graeme Souness celebrating on his return to Ewood Park.
Owen headed home Newcastle’s second goal in the 68th minute, five minutes after Alan Shearer had broken the deadlock with a classic free-kick.
Despite Steven Taylor’s 75th-minute sending-off for a second bookable offence the visitors sealed their win with three minutes left when Charles N’Zogbia burst clear and rounded Brad Friedel.
