Italian police capture top Naples mob boss

16/09/2005 - 09:15:49
Police have arrested the suspected leader of a Naples criminal clan involved in a vicious turf war that sparked dozens of murders last year, officials said today.

Paolo Di Lauro, considered the head of one of the feuding factions in the Camorra crime syndicate, was arrested in Secondigliano, a suburb of Naples, Carabinieri paramilitary police said.

A turf war between the Di Lauro clan and a break-off group that began in November claimed at least 130 lives, according to authorities, triggering a string of police crackdowns.

Di Lauro was listed by the Interior Ministry as one of the country’s 30 most dangerous fugitives.
Police had sought his arrest since 2002 on charges of drug trafficking.

In January police arrested Di Lauro’s son, Cosimo. His capture sparked protests by a group of angry residents, mainly women, who hurled insults and objects at officers.

The Camorra controls drug and arms trafficking, prostitution, extortion and illegal betting rackets in and around Naples.
