Kennelly eyeing Grand prize

16/09/2005 - 21:52:14
Kerryman Tadhg Kennelly is eyeing an Aussie Rules AFL Grand Final winners' medal after he helped the Sydney Swans defeat St Kilda 96-65 in today's Preliminary Final.

The 24-year-old half-back, whose brother Noel will be on the bench for Kerry in Sunday week's All-Ireland final, will be the first Irishman since the Dublin-born Jim Stynes to contest a Grand Final.

The 2005 season decider will take place next weekend when Sydney take on either the West Coast Eagles or Adelaide Crows, who clash tomorrow.

An attendance of 73,344 at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground saw the Swans win through to their first AFL decider since 1996 - the Sydney club's last final win was in 1933.

Kennelly was as all-action as ever today, chalking up 12 kicks, 16 passes, 5 marks and a single tackle, but was not within sight of a goal.

Kennelly's five-time All-Ireland-winning father Tim , mother Nuala and brother Noel watched on at the MCG, but his parents will be torn between their two sons as Tadhg's Grand Final is next Saturday and Noel's All-Ireland final against Tyrone is on Sunday.
