Hensby has it all to do
Mark Hensby, who came from four down to beat Colin Montgomerie in the opening round, quickly found himself in need of another recovery at the HSBC world match play championship at Wentworth today.
The Australian lost four of the first five holes to top seed Retief Goosen, bogeying the first and third and then being unable to match the South African’s birdies at the long fourth and 191-yard fifth.
Goosen, surprisingly, is trying to reach the semi-finals for the first time, but opened his challenge for the £1m (€1.47m) first prize yesterday with a crushing eight and seven victory over England’s Kenneth Ferrie – and has won his last two tournaments.
In the second quarter-final New Zealand’s US Open champion Michael Campbell drew first blood against Australian Steve Elkington, joint runner-up in last month’s US PGA championship.
Campbell struck an eight-iron to eight feet on the short second, made the putt and then halved the next in birdie threes. Elkington made a 16-footer there, but the Brighton-based Kiwi followed him in from half the distance.
Ireland’s Paul McGinley took the lead in his match with Ryder Cup team-mate Luke Donald, Donald bogeying the second after missing the green.
The final game saw Spain’s Jose Maria Olazabal, conqueror of David Howell, against second seed Angel Cabrera, the big-hitting Argentinian who won the BMW Championship on the course in May.
