Gronholm bounces back

16/09/2005 - 16:07:23
Peugeot driver Marcus Gronholm mounted a stunning comeback to climb up to sixth in Wales Rally GB on stage five after brake problems earlier in the day had seen him slip down the order.

Gronholm dropped to 19th on the second stage as he struggled with his brakes after winning the first test of the day.

But the Finn pushed his way back up into the points scoring positions as he finished second behind rally leader Sebastien Loeb on stage four before claiming his second win of the day on stage five.

In contrast, former world champion Colin McRae fell down the leaderboard to 15th in his Skoda after earlier climbing up to ninth.

World championship leader Loeb continues to lead the rally, carving out a 24.8 seconds advantage from Subaru’s Petter Solberg.

Mitsubishi’s Harri Rovanpera remains in third with the second Citroen of Francois Duval fourth and Subaru driver Chris Atkinson fifth.

Kris Meeke, making his debut in a world rally car on the event, is 16th with Stobart Ford driver Mark Higgins 18th.

Aki Teiskonen took charge of the production class standings with reigning champion Niall McShea second.
