Annan urges countries to adopt anti-poverty measures

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan today urged world leaders to agree a range of measures on helping the developing world.

The package would include a commitment to give 0.7% of national income in aid to developing countries and to step up their efforts to achieve the Millenium Development Goals.

He told the UN summit in New York that the measures were a matter of life or death for much of the world: "The hopes of billions rest on the implementation of these and other measures to fight poverty, illiteracy, inequality and on development remaining at the centre of trade negotiations in the year ahead."
