Roscommon finances issue a one-off: GAA president

14/09/2005 - 16:48:27
The president of the GAA said this afternoon he would be very surprised if the mismanagement of funds uncovered in Roscommon were happening in other county boards.

It follows revelations that €60,000 from Roscommon's GAA finances was transferred to a company associated with the former county board chairman.

The money was subsequently returned.

In addition to the controversial money transfer, Roscommon GAA ran up debts of over €1.4m.

Sean Kelly said what happened there was unfortunate but was uncovered due to a new accounting and auditing system being rolled out by the association around the country.

He said he now had full confidence in Roscommon and other counties that finances were being managed properly.

On the ticket mix-up that led to up to a thousand empty seats at Sundays All Ireland Hurling Final and a loss to the GAA of €60,000 in revenue, he said it was a once-off breakdown due to human error.

Mr Kelly said rather than punishing the people involved he was more interested in putting a system in place so it wouldn’t happen again.
