Record immigration levels push population past 4 million

The Central Statistics Office has reported record levels of immigration into Ireland in the year to the end of April this year.

The CSO said around 70,000 migrants had entered Ireland during the 12-month period, the highest figure since records began in 1987.

It also said the native population had increased by around 33,500 over the same period, while around 16,600 people had emigrated away from Ireland.

The CSO said these changes meant the total population in April was around 4.13 million.
