Gym industry body calls for agency to oversee sector
14/09/2005 - 08:28:02Ireland's only representative body for gyms and health clubs has called on the Government to establish an agency to oversee the sector.
At present, the hundreds of gyms that have sprung up in every Irish town and city in recent years are not even obliged to meet basic standards of hygiene or staff training.
Doctors have warned that a lack of regulation and monitoring means gyms and health clubs are a potential breeding ground for disease.
Irish Leisure and Amenity Management, which represents around 300 gyms, said most if not all of these would operate to the highest standard, but there was no inspection regime or quality-mark to verify this.
