Empey welcomes declassification of UVF ceasefire
14/09/2005 - 15:47:45The leader of the Ulster Unionist Party today welcomed the decision by the Northern Secretary Peter Hain to declare the UVF ceasefire over.
Reg Empey’s statement came after four murders and four days of intense loyalist violence in the north following the re-routing of an Orange Order Parade at the weekend.
Mr. Empey was speaking in Dublin ahead of a meeting with the Minister for Justice Michael McDowell and Labour leader Pat Rabitte.
He said a full review of the Parades Commission was imminent: “This Parades Commission seems to have an omnipotence and a role that is above and beyond all reach of government, and I think that's a very serious situation. As it's coming to the end of its term, we now have an opportunity to radically review it”
