Ahern to announce target date for Ireland’s aid promises
14/09/2005 - 08:28:53The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is due to announce a new target date for meeting Ireland's promises on overseas aid later today.
Mr Ahern is due to make the announcement during an address to a UN summit of world leaders in New York tonight.
The Government had promised five years to spend 0.7% of GNP on overseas aid by 2007, but it reneged on that promise last year.
Irish aid agencies want the Taoiseach to set a new target of 2010 for meeting the commitment, but Mr Ahern is widely expected to name 2012 as the date instead.
