57,000 teenagers receiving Junior Cert results today

14/09/2005 - 07:46:11
Almost 57,000 teenagers are receiving their Junior Cert results at schools throughout the country today.

The results will be available in schools themselves from this morning and can also be accessed via the Internet on www.examinations.ie later this afternoon.

Five pupils have achieved 11 A grades in Higher Level papers, four of whom also got an A in CPSE (civic, social and political education).

The overall results are an improvement on last year, with the numbers achieving seven As or more increasing by 15%.

However, high failure rates continued in certain subjects, particularly maths, science and language subjects.

Seven per cent of pupils failed Ordinary Level Science and 5% failed the Higher Level paper, despite the introduction of changes designed to boost the popularity of these subjects.

The Teachers Union of Ireland and Minister for Education Mary Hanafin have congratulated students on the results and have advised them to be sensible when out celebrating tonight.
