Mugabe signs constitutional amendments into law

12/09/2005 - 12:25:10
Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe has quietly signed into law constitutional amendments restricting property and citizenship rights and creating a senate, state radio reported today.

Mugabe signed the amendments into law on Friday, the same day the International Monetary Fund deferred a decision for six months on whether to expel Zimbabwe.

The amendments end freehold title to property and the right of owners to appeal against expropriation. The new amendments also would allow the government to deny passports to political opponents and other critics.
