Galway unchanged for Croker showdown

09/09/2005 - 00:04:36
Galway manager Conor Hayes has named an unchanged side for Sunday's All-Ireland hurling final against Cork at Croke Park.

1988 All-Ireland winning captain Hayes chose from a full strength panel and decided to keep faith with the same fifteen that started the Tribe's incredible 5-18 to 4-18 semi-final win over Kilkenny last month.

Hayes confirmed his team for Sunday's decider - Galway's first senior hurling final since 2001 - after training last night in Athenry. Tony Og Regan starts at full-back with Shane Kavanagh at centre-back after the duo swapped positions to good effect during the win over the Cats.

Abbey/Duniry ace Kevin Broderick had high hopes of being included but the two-time All-star, whose season has been dogged by a groin injury, has to be content with a place on the bench once again.

Hayes explained: "We have decided to go with the same side. We were never going to carry out much alteration. The switch of Tony Og Regan and Shane Kavanagh worked well against Kilkenny and it was obvious they would start in those positions for the final."

The Tribesmen's and the championship's top scorer Ger Farragher, who has notched 3-49 (58 points) so far in the 2005 campaign, has fully recovered from a hamstring strain to start.

GALWAY (SHC v Cork): L Donoghue (capt); D Joyce, T Og Regan, O Canning; D Hardiman, S Kavanagh, D Collins; F Healy, D Tierney; R Murray, D Forde, A Kerins; G Farragher, N Healy, D Hayes.
