Bishops call on Govt to reach aid target by 2010
09/09/2005 - 15:22:20Dr Sean Brady, the Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland has called on the Government to reach our overseas aid target by 2010.
He launched a pastoral letter in Dublin this afternoon on behalf of the bishops' conference.
The letter details how the Government must make a strong commitment to increasing Ireland’s overseas aid at next week’s General Assembly United Nations meeting in New York.
Dr Brady said we are now a wealthy nation and five years is enough time to reach our aid target.
However, the Government has said that it intends to announce that Ireland will reach 0.7% aid by the year 2012 at next week’s summit on the Millennium Goals.
Minister Conor Lenihan said that other countries have ended up wasting money trying to reach their aid target too soon.
