CIE considering use of environmentally friendly fuels

CIE is reportedly considering the use of biodiesel and hybrid engines in its buses due to spiralling international oil prices.

Reports this morning said company chairman John Lynch had ordered a study of such alternatives in an effort to reduce CIE's reliance on diesel.

Biodiesel is a mixture of regular diesel and vegetable oil which can be used in ordinary diesel engines without modification.

Hybrid engines, meanwhile, run on a combination of diesel and electricity.

Speaking in Dublin this morning, Minister for the Environment Dick Roche said he would welcome such a move, which he described as "a step in the right direction".
