Yachtsman on target to break round-Ireland solo record

An Irish Air Corps pilot is making good progress in his effort to break the record for sailing around Ireland single-handedly.

Captain Michael Liddy departed from Dun Laoghaire yesterday afternoon in a 40ft racing yacht and had arrived at the Co Antrim coast this morning after completing 190kms of the 1,100km journey.

He is hoping to shave at least a day off the previous record of seven days and 10 hours, which was set in 2001.
