Sinn Féin: DUP response to President's visit ‘disgraceful’

The SDLP said the decision of President McAleese to cancel tomorrow's visit to the Shankill Road was unfortunate, but probably wise.

Mary McAleese will now meet children at a Belfast hotel instead.

The DUP said the President was not welcome and people were incensed at the thought of her roaming freely in the area.

However, Alex Maskey of Sinn Féin said the DUP was merely stroking sectarian tensions in Belfast.

“I think the DUP response this morning to the cancellation of this visit is quite disgraceful. I think it’s very important that rather than showing some positive leadership, they would prefer to whip up sectarian tensions.”
