Ireland ranked eighth in UN human development table

07/09/2005 - 12:16:27
The United Nations has ranked Ireland eighth out of 177 countries in its latest human development table.

The ranking represents a jump of nine places for Ireland since 2002 and is mainly attributable to recent economic successes that have left the country second only to Luxembourg in terms of wealth creation.

Norway are top of this year's league table, followed by Iceland, Australia, Luxembourg and Canada, while African countries made up the bottom 24 nations.

The human development table takes into account a range of factors including life expectancy, adult literacy, income levels and educational achievement.
